Pisces Fish Report October 5th to 12th

Date: 10/15/2019

Another spectacular week of fishing in Cabo - Here’s the numbers: 247 Billfish caught and released, which included Striped and Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Sailfish, and a surprise Swordfish catch on Pisces 42’ Caliente. Pisces 31’ Ruthless found the Blue marlin honey-hole on October 9th, when they went 2 for 4 on Blues; those released were about 200 - 250 lbs and they released a sailfish too. BIG Yellowfin Tuna this week: one of 217 lbs caught on Pisces 31’ Tracy Ann (they’ve had 3 YFT between 100 - 200 lbs in the span of a week and a half) and the other three, caught on Pisces 35’ Bill Collector 2, (who’ve caught the biggest YFT of the season in previous weeks, 286 lbs!). Captain Gil Castro and anglers landed a 251 pounder, and then Saturday, landed THREE more, which weighed in at 39, 154 and 181 pounds!

Tournament season is officially around the corner, and the conditions and fishing could not be any better for it. Striped marlin catches are still off the charts good, the fleet released 277 marlin total this week, with a steady number of Blue marlin making up part of this too, averaging 200 - 300 lbs each. Dorado continue in very good numbers, a total of 281 caught this week, with catch limits respected and fish ranging from 25 to 40 lbs easily. Highlights for Yellowfin Tuna on the bigger side were a 80 lbs tuna on Pisces 35’ Knot Workin’, then two just over 100 lbs caught on Pisces 31’ Tracy Ann on consecutive days, a 157 pounder on Pisces 32’ Bill Collector, and a 225 lbs Yellowfin on Pisces 25’ No Borders. We had a total of 63 Yellowfin caught in the fleet and a few wahoo sprinkled in too. But the best of all, its not only been good, but its been consistent, with 97% catch success rates for 100 Pisces boats fishing this week. Weather has been nice except for the wind, which has made long runs out for tuna and marlin a bit uncomfortable, but with the quality fishing found at the grounds, we can’t complain.

There were 147 Billfish RELEASED this week by 36 boats. That’s an average of 4 billfish per boat, although we had Pisces 31’ Rebecca for example, released 19 Striped Marlin and 1 Sailfish yesterday, with 10 more marlin bites that didn't stick. We had quite a few Blue Marlin between 300 and 500 lbs released and Pisces 31’ Tiburon had a GRAND SLAM with 1 Striped marlin, 1 Blue marlin of about 300 lbs, and 1 Sailfish, plus 10 dorado (mahi). Speaking of dorado, there were 237 fish caught total with many released, respecting catch limits. There were very good sizes on the dorado as well, making it easy to pick and choose which ones to take home, from so many caught. For example, top dorado boat Pisces 28’ Andrea caught 22 Dorado in one day, with two anglers on board. They kept fish that averaged 20-30 lbs each. Now for tuna… Only 8 boats targeted tuna this week, but boy did it pay off! The 4 largest yellowfin tuna caught by Pisces 35’ Bill Collector 2 and Pisces 35’ Knot Workin’ were a 68 pounder, 118 pounder, 164 pounder and a cow-sized 286 pound yellowfin.

Even with this week’s Hurricane Lorena, which only brought slight rain and closed the port Friday and Saturday, the amazing fishing continues. Marlin catches are down slightly, but only due to the fact that we fished less days because of this. We had 100 billfish released compared to 165 last week, but we did see more blue marlin this week, sailfish and even some spearfish released. Many boats this week caught and released up to 10 striped marlin each, with tons of more marlin bites still! Catch numbers for dorado doubled, as last week we saw over 40 dorado caught, and this week we had a total of 97, of course respecting catch limits. Tuna numbers increased as well, but also because we had more boats targeting them and, another notable fish landed this week. This time it was angler Derek Stills aboard Pisces 38’ C Rod catching a 140 lbs Yellowfin close to San Jaime Bank.

Marlin fishing turned way up beginning the week, with striped mostly up the Pacific coast and more blues towards the Sea of Cortez. We also got a report out of the East Cape at La Ribera, of an estimated 800 lbs Black Marlin caught by local fishermen. Again this week we have had a large yellowfin of about 200 lbs caught on Pisces 25’ No Borders, which is the same boat that caught the 110 lbs yellowfin last week. These consistent large tuna and marlin catches are making for a great warm up to tourney season, starting off in exactly a month from now! And not only have we seen the large gamefish, but the striped marlin bite has heated way up. Top marlin release boat this week was Pisces 37’ Tag Team III with 16 Striped Marlin released in one day!

We sure don’t get tired of saying it, ITS BEEN ONE HELL OF A WEEK in Cabo! This week was one of our best for this time of year for billfish, with a whopping 132 billfish caught and released between 30 boats, which included Sailfish, Blue marlin and Striped marlin. Throw in a nice tag recapture and re-release on one of 3 striped marlin caught on Pisces 42’ Caliente too and a 597 lbs Blue Marlin caught on Pisces 31’ Ruthless by angler Kevin Blaeholder from Texas. The weigh-in was bittersweet because the original intent was to release the fish, but the meat was shared by angler and crew and donated to our partner organization “Feeding Los Cabos Kids” , which has 14 community kitchens serving some of the poorest kids in the Los Cabos area. Apart from billfish this week, we still saw good tuna numbers for those that ignored the hot billfish bite, and they reaped rewards, for example, Pisces 25’ No Borders landed a 110 lbs Yellowfin. More dorado showed up towards the end of the week, and in decent sizes, ranging from 15 to 30 lbs each. We also saw a few wahoo (about 25 lbs) and one spearfish to close out the week, along with a few big rooster fish of about 50 lbs. Fishing has been divided between the Pacific and Sea of Cortez, with a stronger shift back to the Pacific for billfish towards the end of this week.

Although this week saw the port closed from the 22nd to the 24th because a tropical storm nearby, the fishing did bring some nice surprises even if it was slightly inconsistent. And by inconsistent I mean for Cabo standards, as on some days we landed one fish per boat, but on others we had BIG fish and good numbers, as you can see by our percentages. Highlights this week include a 700 lbs Black Marlin released on a private boat, Hammer Time, and the epic release of an approx 215 lbs yellowfin tuna on our Pisces 31’ Tracy Ann. Tracy Ann caught a 146 pounder last week as well, and the Pisces 28’ Andrea caught an 128 lbs yellowfin this week too, along with 2 dorado and 2 striped marlin released in the same day! Other boats in the area have also reported big tuna, from 100 - 250 lbs each being caught. Dorado numbers picked up in the beginning of the week, but slowed towards the weekend. Blue marlin have been consistent, with blues caught and released almost daily, ranging from 150 to 280 lbs approx. each. Thirteen blue marlin and twenty-eight striped marlin were caught this week by Pisces.

A pretty spectacular week with not one or two, but THREE Billfish Grand Slams by Pisces boats the 42’ Caliente and 30’ Karina in less than 24 hours (one of which was just short of being a Super Grand Slamas they lost a Black Marlin). Most boats caught and average of 3 to 5 billfish each, with a total of 74 Billfish for the fleet and only 3 boated and the rest successfully tagged and released. Dorado numbers were good as well, 39 dorado caught total, mostly ranging in size from 10 - 30 lbs each. Again, we saw decent tuna numbers for those that went the 20- 35 miles to find them, with Pisces 31’ Tracy Ann landing a 146 pounder! Currently, the port is closed due to a tropical storm nearby, which has only brought rain. Still, Port Captain is extending precautions, and we should be back out fishing Sunday. Previous days were slightly overcast, with small swells only, some humidity, and no wind. Fishing has been focused mostly on the Sea of Cortez Side from Punta Gorda to Destiladeras for outstanding Billfish catches and out at at the San Jaime Banks for tuna; Dorado has been spread out, and there has been some inshore fishing as well for triggerfish and red snapper mostly. We also saw a barracuda catch this week, which is rarely seen.

The Blue Marlin are definitely showing up in Cabo now, and that’s not the only species we’re happy to see. The yellowfin tuna numbers have stepped up nicely, including a report of a BIG Yellowfin, which weighed in at 254 lbs, caught by Fin Addict yesterday - keep reading for full details on capture (WON Tuna tourney can’t get here soon enough!). All Blue Marlin caught have been between 200 and 250 lbs each, found at the 11:50 and 130 Spots mostly and hitting on lures (purple, gaucamayo). Pisces anglers released a total of 55 billfish this week. Plus an incredible Billfish Grand Slam by anglers Calvin Warriner and Calvin Warriner III from Colorado aboard Pisces 31’ La Brisa, tagging and releasing a Sailfish, Striped Marlin and Blue Marlin, they also added some tuna to the mix, just in case their day wasn’t epic enough as it was. And yes, the tuna are still quite the run out, but boats looking for them have found upwards of 10 yellowfin per boat on average; with fish between 10 and 35 lbs each; and total numbers for the fleet hitting 224 fish. Dorado numbers are holding this week as well, with nice sized Bull Dorados making for some fun catches, mostly hitting on live bait.

This week of fishing in Cabo was great overall, with a slight lull the first two days of the week, but then as water warmed even more, the fishing got HOT! Pisces 31’ Tracy Ann and anglers Guy Serio and Amy Schweers released 6 Striped Marlin in one day, and then released 2 Blue Marlin and a Striped Marlin the next. Pisces 42’ Hot Rod and the Powell family from Texas also released 5 Striped marlin in one day this week, and many other boats did great with a mix of billfish which included Blue marlin, Striped and Sailfish averaging 2-3 per boat. Blue marlin were in the 200 - 250 lbs range mostly, while the striped marlin were an average of 110 lbs. Pisces totaled 92 billfish caught and released this week. Dorado numbers were the best we’ve seen all year; finally making us feel like the Summer fishing is here. There were 30 dorados caught total this week, including a nice 44 pounder caught by Whitney Becker on the Pisces 37’ Tag Team III today and an approximate 50 pounder caught on Pisces 38’ C Rod, early on in the week. We also saw a few nice wahoo and yellowtail too. Tuna numbers were also good, although not many boats went in search of them, 100 tunas in total caught. Inshore fishing remains good, with jack crevalle, sierra mackerel, a few red snapper and still some nice roosterfish around, including an approx 45 pounder tagged and released on Pisces 24’ Tres Marlins Panga for angler Richard Pevey from South Carolina who ticked the fish off his bucket list and another 45 pounder tagged and released on Pisces 31’ Tracy Ann as well.
