Fishing Reports Date: 7/14/2019
Warmer water temperatures on the Cortez and Pacific brought some good fishing in the first few days of the week. We saw anglers heading out to find lots of tuna, some marlin and landing a few dorado per boat, even if some were too small to keep and others, like the 56.7 lbs Trophy Bull Dorado caught by Rudy Mendoza on the Pisces 35’ Valerie impressed at the dock. Pisces 31’ Rebecca also came back last Monday with a very nice approx. 50lbs Wahoo, making it seem that this week was going to be one of our best so far. But, as fishing would have it, it began to get a bit more inconsistent come midweek, and crews had to work very hard to find and land the fish, as we had some picky billfish. With that said, the Pisces 31’ Rebecca still managed to catch and release 5 striped marlin at Destiladeras in one day and we saw some Blue Marlin start to show up too; all released and mostly around 200 to 250 lbs each. We had seven blues and 49 billfish caught total for the fleet this week, along with 160 yellowfin tuna. Inshore fishing included grouper, jack crevalle, triggerfish, and a couple of roosterfish.

The week began with nice hot weather and warming seas, on the Cortez side at least. The week temperatures on Pacific side remained at about 70 F while the Cortez was quite a few degrees warmer, even up to 80 F. But again, as the week progressed temperatures decided to cool a bit again, keeping the crews on their toes. Lots of sharks around, from mako to hammerhead to silkies. The marlin bite slowed a bit, with up to 2 marlin caught per boat and the boys had to work hard to land them (all released). They used live bait, mostly caballito and some lisas to get them to bite. It was nice to see some dorado though, even if not in huge amounts, start to show up. Mostly dorado ranged from 8 to 15 lbs each and hit on ballyhoo and lures. Porpoise and tuna schools were easy to find this week, if you traveled the 25 to 35 miles to find them that is. But it payed off, boats caught up to 15 tunas each with fish ranging from 10 to 20/25 lbs each, usually hitting on cedar plugs. A few wahoo were sprinkled into catches as well. Inshore action remains good; yellowtail, sierra mackerel, roosterfish, jack crevalle, triggerfish and some grouper were caught this week. We also had an exciting recapture of one of our tagged and released roosterfish caught last week!

A surprising catch this Saturday, with Pisces 31’ La Brisa hitting the docks with a swordfish, found on the surface close to shore and caught on 40 lbs test.
Changing weather, again this week, made for some challenging fishing as water temperatures varied and fish didn't stay long in the same areas. We had two days of strange thick fog that rolled deep into town and a bit of wind on some days. This would happen and then the next day, turn up the heat, then back up to fog and cooler water… Still though, we had good marlin numbers, 85 released total for 40 boats. Dorado and Tuna were scarce, only a couple caught, but the inshore fishing held up. BIG rooster fish again this week, and lots of them, plus some yellowtail, sierra, bonita, snapper and some triggerfish.

This week’s fishing was not as consistent as last week’s, which we attribute mostly to the inconsistent weather. The water temperatures, although not drastically, did lower to around 76F, whereas ending last week we saw them at about 82 F. Winds again brought difficulty to fishing, as speeds hit up to 20 Knots; but this time not only on the Pacific but also on some parts of the Sea of Cortez (although wind picked up mostly after midday). With this said though, we did begin to see the dorado finally start to show up, and in slightly bigger numbers. On the East Cape there were reports of a few dorados of about 50 lbs each which is great news especially with the Dorado Shootout Tournament coming up in Los Barriles, July 20th. Marlin numbers totaled 126 releases this week, down from last week (but in all fairness this also has a lot to do with the two tournaments that took place then, the Pelagic and ILLTA). Tuna was scarce, mainly because anglers preferred not to go out the 40 miles to find them with the weather conditions. Instead, they stuck by closer for the marlin or headed inshore for roosterfish, sierra mackerel and snapper, which were very productive; for example, we had 8 roosterfish released on one boat on its best day.

A Staggering 263 Striped Marlin were caught by Pisces boats this week and ALL were released! We had two tournaments take place, the 79th Annual ILTTA Tournament (International Light Tackle Tournament Association) and the start of the Pelagic Triple Crown Tournament. We are proud to report that three of our boats placed in both tournaments, with Pisces 31’ Tracy Ann taking 2nd place in the ILLTA and Pisces 37’ Tag Team III taking 2nd Place in the Tuna division of Pelagic, along with Pisces 72’ Tag Team taking 3rd in the Billfish division. We are also happy to announce that all seven of our Pisces boats placed in the top 10 of the ILTTA Tourney. Outside of billfish, dorado and tuna were very slow, although we did see two big tunas caught by boat Retriever and another out on the East Cape by Van Wormer fishing; the tuna were 257 lbs and 234 lbs respectively; showing size that the big tuna bite may start soon. The only dorados caught this week were too small to keep.

This week’s fishing was very successful; especially if you were looking to catch marlin. One hundred and twenty-two striped marlin were caught and released total by Pisces boats this week only. The week did start off slightly slower for the billfish, but picked up nicely by midweek, with several boats returning with up to 5 marlin released each. And although the weather was a little gloomy and the wind did pick up on some days, it was mostly on the Pacific side (marlin fishing has been further South or on the Sea of Cortez). Even with this, the inshore fishing on the Pacific was also fruitful, with roosterfish, snapper and yellowtail being the top producing fish.

Another great week of fishing in Cabo! Quite a few highlights this time around, as we also had one of our Pisces boats, Pisces 72’ Tag Team, participate in the 1st Annual Robert Ross Tournament in Loreto, bringing back 1st place with 22 billfish released! In Cabo, we saw decent numbers of striped marlin around too, with the top boat being Pisces 31’ Tracy Ann with 5 Striped marlin released in one day. Tuna and dorado were slow, with only a few caught of each, but the inshore fishing was excelente. Again, Roosterfish, Jack Crevalle and Red Snapper, along with some Yellowtail, Grouper and Triggerfish, were the main catches.

This week the weather has remained pretty stable, with only one or two days of strong winds, but this didn't seem to affect fishing much. The inshore action picked up quite a bit, with roosterfish, sierra and jack crevalle being the main targets. Top boats caught and released up to 13 roosterfish in one day. Marlin catch and release percentages also remained constant, although many boats did spot many marlin but struggled to get them to bite. With that said, the top boat, Pisces 31’ Tracy Ann, released 5 stripeys. And, seems like we’ve been closing out the week with great wahoo catches. Again, a nice wahoo caught on Pisces 31’ La Brisa, estimated at 60 lbs.
Fishing Reports Date: 5/7/2019
We were very happy this week to see that the weather and the fishing have improved! We are up over thirty percentage points in our overall catch success rate this time around, with 63 out of 66 boats catching fish! Winds have died down for the most part (only a few where they picked up intermittently) and water temperatures South of Cabo have risen a few degrees; with this the marlin have shown up. In total this week, our fleet caught and released 60 Striped Marlin with an average of about 1-3 per boat, and some boats releasing up to 5 marlin each. Tuna numbers did fall slightly, but mostly because anglers chose to target marlin over them; but those who did go for the yellowfin found them in good numbers and sometimes found luck with a marlin release too. The largest tuna this week was caught on Pisces 38’ C Rod, weighing approx. 120 lbs with owners aboard. Other catches have included a few dorado, jack crevalle, roosterfish, ladyfish, skipjack, bonita and even one or two makos.
