BILLFISH: Wow what a comeback the marlin fishing made this week; we had great catches for most boats, though we did have a few that got “skunked” due to anglers getting sea sick and asking to come back, or simply not finding hungry fish. It would seem unusual that marlin fishing is so good, until we check back out trusty archives, which show that fishing was the same last year and moderately good the year before

We are pleased to report an improvement in the fishing this week, as the moon waned we still had some hit or miss days but also some outstanding ones. The water never really got cold so now with the moon gone all the signs are that the fishing will take an upturn. To start out the period Pisces Listo headed to the 95 spot on the Cortez side where they did well to release four marlin from 120 150 lbs. for Robert Russell & Todd Miller from Las Vegas & Kingwood Texas, respectively. This same day Pisces Rebecca had a great day too, a little further out at the Herradura, where they released three stripers and boated six dorado for Candy Johnson and friends from Dress, Idaho.

Inshore and smaller game dominated the catches this week with forty five percent of our charters catching skipjacks, sierra, rooster fish, trigger fish and lesser number of pompano, yellow tail, amberjack & bonitas. Pisces Ruthless released five roosters up to 25 lbs. for John Ropas from Lubbock, Texas and was the high catch boat for this species. Fantastic marlin action was experienced by most boat throughout this past week, as boats regularly had multiple hook ups, however, this week the location changed mid-week to a completely different area - Golden Gate was no longer the location of choice. This past week could almost be called the striped marlin report, because that is practically all we caught, and in good numbers. Looking back over the past three years, the first week of March of this year has been better by far for marlin, than in previous years. The water temperature is still above 70 F even us far up as Loreto. Fishing was exclusively at Golden Gate for marlin in the 100 to 150 lb.

BILLFISH: We had a pretty decent week, even though numbers are a bit lower this report, but this was directly linked to bad weather on February 5th, when we had cloudy skies, wind & choppy seas, causing even our most productive boats to come back with nothing, nevertheless other days we saw some really good fishing. The most exciting catch this week was of a 60 LB short bill spearfish

Fishing this week was for the most part consistent, however we had a couple of days when it was too windy to get up the Pacific to the Golden Gate where the marlin have been hanging out, causing boats to seek other locations with calmer seas but not quite as good production. Top marlin boat was Pisces Shambala for releasing seven striped marlin at the Golden Gate for Brad Kline & friends from Bethesda, Maryland – all caught on live mackerel

Fishing was really good in Cabo this week and although striped marlin catches edged out the other species as the most likely catch, sheer numbers of tuna beat them by far. This made for great fishing because not only did close to half the boats catch marlin, they could also load up on tuna and even dorado which made a brief comeback
