Fishing Reports

Pisces Fish Report—April 8th to April 14th, 2017

Date: 4/18/2017

This week we saw some days with great marlin catches while others days were better for inshore. As last week we were catching yellowfin tuna, and now this week it seems like they moved out of the area with none being landed. However, to make up for it we had a great variety of inshore fishes, we had: red snapper, skipjack, triggerfish, sierra mackerel, ladyfish, red snapper and grouper, as well as mako and hammerhead sharks (released). Most of the fishing took place either at the Cabrillo seamount or the 11:50 spot, while those targeting inshore species went up along the Pacific side. The Pisces Tracy Ann captained by Julio Castro was our top marlin boat this week, catching and releasing. . .

A catch success rate of 86% this week saw a wide range of different fish species. The beginning of the week saw boats either going to the 11:50 Spot looking for marlin or staying inshore fishing on the Pacific side. While the second half of the week saw boats hitting up a few different spots for striped marlin and yellowfin tuna (making a reappearance).

We had fairly good fishing this week, with 74% of all boats that went out landing some kind of fish, mostly we saw inshore fish being landed. The most common smaller game fish that Pisces boats caught this week were: sierra mackerel, red snapper, wahoo, amberjack, ladyfish, grouper, skipjack, sea bass, pompano and even the odd mako shark. Although the most notable story this week is the return of the striped marlin bite; we mostly saw boats landing them around the 95 and 11:50 spots.

Fishing continued to be good this week with 82% of Pisces boats landing fish; they were mostly of the inshore variety. Our top species this week for inshore were: sierra mackerel, red snapper, grouper, amberjack, roosterfish, yellowtail, ladyfish, skipjack, and jack crevalle. Most of the boats ended up heading to spots on the Pacific side, however, fishing at the 11:50 spot yielded the only marlin catches this week, all of them being striped marlin near 150lbs. We had great catches this week, with many species of inshore fish in large numbers making an appearance. This week, the “other” category (75% catch success rate) was populated with: sierra mackerel, red snapper, sea bass, grouper, pompano, yellowtail, ladyfish, roosterfish; as well as thresher, hammerhead and mako sharks. Since most of these aren’t too big, they make the perfect fish for the whole family to target. We would also note that there have been reports of big wahoo catches out of San Jose, which perfectly represents our variable fishing as the seasons change. With that being said, the Pisces Bill Collector managed to break the pelagic slump this week, landing a 280lbs. . .

This week saw almost exclusive catches in the other category, with the main gamefish being caught by our boats in the fleet being: sierra mackerel, grouper, yellowtail, red snapper, roosterfish and amberjack. Boats remained for the most part on the Pacific side and used macarela (mackerel) for live bait, or it was cut up as bait and sunk to the bottom to coax out the groupers and other deeper water inshore fishes. Two boats this week landed marlin, one of them having gone out to the Finger Bank, while the other was lucky enough to find a marlin near the Old Lighthouse at Cabo Falso.

This week saw mostly small to medium tuna action as well as a varied inshore bite, many boats landed about 10-20 tuna per boat per day. Species ranged from amberjack, grouper, ladyfish, red snapper to yellowtail and a few others. While 73% of boats that went out landed fish, we did have a non-existent billfish bite, with some boats traveling further out to go after possible larger tuna and billfish being unsuccessful. Most captains opted for going after our smaller and less well-known inshore gamefish, adding a touch of color and curious looking critters
