We are starting to get excited about the June season here in Cabo. Things have really picked up in the last few weeks and this week’s catch success amongst boats has climbed to almost 90%. The majority of boats are heading for striped marlin, with up to 6 striped marlin caught per boat in one day, but tuna and other smaller game catches have been equally good. The roosterfish are definitely here now, making for a lot of fun fishing, with some boats catching up to 9 of them per outing! Jack crevelle, amberjacks, grouper and sierra mackerel have been the majority of our “other” species caught. And let’s not forget about our almost 700lbs black marlin hooked this past Sunday; all signs of an exciting June tournament season, kicking off with the Pelagic Cabo Summer Slam in this next week and the Stars and Stripes Tournament at the end of the month.

“I have some friends coming down this weekend that have never caught a marlin. Maybe we should go…”, said Stan in response, but little did he know, that only 3 days later these anglers’ first time marlin would be giving them the fight of a lifetime.
Stan and his group of four anglers went out on Sunday, aboard our 42ft Cabo Flybridge, Hot Rod. Captain Erick Orozco is no stranger to big fish, still, he confessed to me that he was caught off guard by the almost 700 lbs black marlin who took his bait on this day.

Marlin numbers have spiked this week, with 6 striped marlin caught by 35ft Valerie and 31ft Ruthless on their luckiest day. The weekend brought with it various stripers per boat, found far up the East Cape, past Punta Gorda. Jack crevelle and a nice wahoo were some of the smaller game catches, with yellowfin tuna still found about 30 miles out.

Fishing has been consistent this month, with this week maintaining roughly the same averages of species caught per boat. Slightly better this week have been tuna numbers, with more fish caught per boat. This Friday we saw marlin numbers start to pick up as well, with every boat out catching marlin, except for one. We are eager to see if this trend continues into next week… Weather has continued to be pretty nice, hot sun and some days with some wind picking up (only for a few hours).

I’ll paint you a picture of Cabo this week: the weather has been beautiful, with sunshine everyday and not too much heat, a bit of a breeze to cool off afternoons and fish in your cooler for lunch or to take home. Even though catch success rate did drop a bit this week, the tuna numbers are still steady and we saw many boats having fun with the smaller game fish too. These catches included roosterfish, snappers, groupers, and more.
