Pisces Fish Report—September 17th to 23rd, 2016

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

September 17th to 23rd, 2016

Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 92%

Numbers at a glance: Billfish 38%, Dorado 78%, Tuna 8%, Other 28%

BILLFISH: For being September there were actually quite a few anglers in town this past week, despite hot and humid weather the fishermen venturing out were pleased with their results. Our catch rate for all species combined was 92% with just a few boats not catching anything. There was a pretty good mix on billfish with blue marlin, striped marlin and a couple of sailfish. The largest fish for us this week was aboard the 38 ft. Blackfin  C Rod, a 411 LB blue marlin caught at the Jaime Bank on the Pacific by David and Wayne Henson from Spring, Texas who also managed to land three dorado. This might have been one of the biggest fish, but probably the best day was had by  Bill Collector on September 17th for the Pennington’s from Texas, who managed to release a blue marlin, just shy of 200 LBS and then boat five dorado, an impressive 154 LB tuna, and two wahoo…..hard to beat a day like that.  Pisces La Brisa was another boat that had a great day with Colorado anglers Annie and Chris, who were able to release a blue marlin and a striped marlin as well as catch five dorado. The popular Tracy Ann had one of the only sailfish of the week, along with two striped marlin, all released, at Destiladeras on the Cortez side for a group of anglers from Australia – Alan, Andrew and Jeff from Queensland  - all of their fish took live caballito. Thirty eight percent of our charters caught billfish of some sort this week, with action on both the Cortez and Pacific, giving us a total of 10 striped marlin, 5 sailfish and 6 blue marlin, all but two fish were released.

OTHER SPECIES: For the first time this year, dorado became the most widely caught fish, with seventy eight percent of our boats catching between one and fifteen fish in  a day, nevertheless sizes were not great with maximum around 25 LBS. Many of the smaller fish were released, for example Bill Collector caught 15 in one day but released 10 of them as they were tiddlers at 5 to 12 LBS and only the larger ones were kept.  The Pacific was better for dorado in the Gaspareno to Golden Gate areas with feathers working well for this species. Our total dorado catch was 155 fish. There were some nice catches of wahoo this week, which is always much appreciated by anglers in the know, as the majority of fishermen claim this to be the best eating fish there is. Just a few tuna were brought in, usually around 30 LBS, but with some big fish exceptions. Some boats even had double hook ups, but size wise they were seldom more than 35 LBS.  Inshore boats picked up skipjacks in fair numbers along with the odd red snapper and triggerfish.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Mostly clear skies, a couple of cloudy days, seas 2 to 5 feet and calm.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 82-86 F

LOCATION: San Jaime, Golden Gate, Pozo de Cota, Antenna on Pacific and Cabrillo Sea Mount and Destiladeras on the Pacific.

BEST LURES: Live caballito, feathers, cedar plugs, green, black/red.
