Fishing was not easy this week, with some boats running up to 40 miles, though usually for tuna and still blanking out, whilst others stayed in around the 20 miles mark and did better. There was no set recipe for success an even though seventy five percent of our boats caught fish, this is not as good as we expect. It’s hard to say why, but we feel the weather is not as hot as it should be….if you are visiting you would say we are crazy, “it’s baking out there”, but we should have more tropical storms out in the Pacific; it seems they are taking a different track towards Hawaii at this time, plus we had a waxing moon all week with full moon happening the last date of this report. The sea surface temperate satellite maps tell the story too; the water is blended near Cabo with no clear temperature breaks. Nevertheless, billfish were the number one catch for Pisces anglers this week and though some boats got “skunked” others had remarkable catches.

The most unusual thing we saw this period was the amount of sailfish being caught, which have never before outnumbered marlin, but which have for the last couple of weeks. Besides a mix of billfish we saw great numbers on yellowfin tuna as well several wahoo and a few big dorado. Andrea our 28 ft. Uniflite had an outstanding week with some incredible catches – the best day for this boat was July 21st when Michael Long Sr. & Jr. were aboard with Michael Knize, all from Dallas. They caught an approximate 280 lb. blue marlin, a 250 lb. black marlin, a sailfish and 84 lb. tuna, 40 lb. dorado and lost a wahoo – now that’s a fantastic day!

We had a big moon this week, which meant some tough fishing during the phase when it was full and the day leading up to it and just after, nevertheless when the fishing was on, it was red hot. Added to this were the abundant tuna catches which were a welcome bonus most days. We were again surprised by the number of blue marlin and sailfish, which combined, outnumbered the catches of striped marlin, something we have not seen in years. Biggest blue marlin for us this week was a 350 lb’er released aboard Pisces 35 ft. Cabo Listo, by Bryan Brewer from Boston, Mass, just outside the Golden Gate, where he also released two striped marlin

BILLFISH: We had an excellent week here in Cabo with plenty of billfish action; in fact these were the most likely catch to be encountered when out on a charter. The surprising thing though, was the number of sailfish, which outnumbered the marlin this week. Consistent blue marlin catches, also added to the success this week. The blue marlin are not huge with fish seldom being over 300 lbs., nevertheless we had a lot of first ever blue marlin catches for different anglers, who commented on the difference in strength between these and the more commonly caught striped marlin.

BILLFISH: This week we had a few spots of unsettled weather, but that didn’t seem to affect the heat or the fishing, as boats busily reeled in a variety of billfish or smaller game fish. July is actually one of the best months of the year for fishing, a time when catches are plentiful and different billfish can be caught

What a great week in Cabo! Not only did we have our resident striped marlin but we also started to see some consistent blue marlin catches as well as the odd sailfish. First blue marlin of the week was caught by Lester Matlock, June 23rd, twenty eight miles out from the 11.50 the fish took a live caballito and was estimated at 184 lbs. before being released from the Pisces La Brisa. The next day out La Brisa headed to the Cabrillo area and managed to catch a blue marlin just past the 200 lb. mark and two sailfish for fifteen year old Kash Sisk from Emory, Texas

This week saw great fishing in the Los Cabos area, with hotter than normal weather producing some great catches in fact 100% of our boats caught fish. We did not have as many sheer marlin numbers this week but boats regularly caught between one and four billfish each.
