Fishing Reports Date: 10/15/2013
Another stunning week of fishing in Cabo which gave us a near perfect record of every boat catching fish – however, we had a few anglers that wanted to fish exclusively for large yellow fin tuna (probably remembering that the all tackle world record for this species was caught this time last year) but unfortunately drew a blank. On the other hand though we saw a very high hook up rate for marlin and sailfish leading to a catch rate of eighty six percent.

This week we had plenty of activity on the fishing front, but perhaps not as many billfish as we had hoped for. The marlin & sailfish rates went down slightly, but one of the biggest factors was that of anglers wanting to catch eating fish, such as dorado and tuna and perhaps to save the big ones for the upcoming fishing tournaments.

Fishing in Cabo remains unabated with anglers being kept busy in waters teeming with fish, well perhaps more dorado than marlin but nevertheless great catches. Thankfully this week the port was open every day and even with a big moon we still had some nice hookups. “Fearless” had the largest fish of the week for Glen Sheridan from East Windsor, New Jersey on September 21st.

Cabo was again plagued by tropical weather this week, causing the port to be closed partly on the 17th and fully on the 18th & 19th, frustrating for anglers and crews alike, but we are thankful that no major damage was sustained. Just before the rains and wind we had some pretty spectacular fishing days.

Cabo shows no signs of slowing down on the fishing front, despite being plagued with weather issues this past few weeks, anglers in the know are aware that summer is one of the best times to be in Cabo due to the sheer numbers of fish around. Pisces Tracy Ann has a superb week, turning out to be top boat on several days.

Cabo seems to have been a target for tropical weather over the past couple of weeks with visits from tropical storms Ivo, Juliette, Kiko & Lorena which left a lot of rain, but not much damage. The fish don’t seem to mind though; neither do the anglers, who despite some bumpy seas and several port closures stuck it out and did really well.

It’s hard to explain but Cabo feels different, the weather & fishing feel like times past, maybe ten to fifteen years ago. Hard to put into words but something you can feel when you have been here a long time. Fishing is off the charts; boats return to port every day with outriggers maxed out with flags and not an inch to spare.

We just want the whole world to know how fantastic fishing is in Baja California Sur right now, not just Cabo, but the East Cape and La Paz too. Surely this is the best fishery in the world; year round catches incredible numbers of game fish, perfect weather and some of the best crews on the planet. We would be hard pressed to remember a slow week in 2013.

We are having a fantastic summer with billfish thick off of the Cabo coast. Once the moon waned we saw high marlin numbers come back for many boats. Best one day today was for Pisces Tracy Ann with twelve striped marlin released at Punta Gorda for Frank & Joseph Ianno from Staten Island, New York – that’s a lot of fish for two guys. This same day, July 27th, Pisces La Brisa managed to release eight marlin in the 100 to 130 lb.
