Fishing Reports

Pisces Sportfishing July 6th-12th 2013

Date: 7/12/2013

We again experienced superb catches in Los Cabos this week, despite the port being closed one day due to an approaching storm, which turned out to be nothing more than a day of rain and choppy seas. At this time of year, practically every week there will be some kind of tropical weather off of Mexico, the thing is not to be daunted but to go ahead with fishing plans. Thankfully most of the storms skirt us and this time of year is actually produces some of the best catches.

This has been the best week of the year so far for fishing; “wow!” is all we can say and even we, used to the great Cabo fishery, are astounded at how good the catches have been. Our total marlin catch this week was 344 fish – all but two were released.

This week was bit on the up and down side, but that was due to the seas rather than the fishing. With hurricane Cosme to the south of us, there was no immediate threat to the Los Cabos area as it spun westward into the Pacific, but it did cause some very big seas, which led to the port being closed partially for a couple of days. The large swells continued for several days causing a number of anglers to get sea-sick and asking to return to port.

This week we saw quite a drop on billfish catches, but this was a case of them moving beyond the regular reach of day charter boats, rather than them not biting. When studying the sea surface temperatures it was pretty evident that that the fish had moved up to the East Cape beyond the range of charters leaving out of Cabo, nevertheless there were still some strays off of Punta Gorda and Destiladeras; in fact the week started out with steady catches of one and two marlin each, before turning into three days where even our top marlin boats got “skunked”.

: We were very pleased with the marlin fishing this week as it was so consistent. Boats regularly caught one to three fish in the 100 to 150 lb. class and some occasionally doing even better with four or five. The fishing did move a little further away than last week with the best catches taking place off of San Jose at Punta Gorda. Pisces El Gallo had the best day this week with five marlin released for Carl Jerome and Jose Smith from Iowa; they also boated a 25 lb. dorado.

Marlin fishing was good this week even though we had a big moon generally thought to adversely affect the bite, this was not the case and some of our best catches were when the moon was biggest. Two boats tied for most marlin in a day Pisces Tracy Ann, for releasing seven on May 24th for Keith Milam and Agens Benedietto from Fort Worth Texas and Pisces Ruthless who also caught seven marlin for Frank and Emily Volpe from Half Moon Bay, California. Both boats were at the 11.50 spot and used live caballito, also known as green jack for bait.

The striped marlin bit is still not full throttle but we were really happy that they moved in closer to Cabo so that anglers don’t have to run thirty plus miles. Catches were excellent for some boats, with one of the top performers this week being Pisces Listo; they released three fish up to 150 lbs.

It was feast or famine this week, with some days producing outstanding catches, only to be followed by a day or so with little to no catches...

After such stupendous fishing as reported last week, we were hoping for more of the same and we did to a degree have this, but not in the same numbers. That said striped marlin was the number one catch this week in Cabo.

All we can say is “wow”, what a turnaround, this past week we had a growing moon, with full moon on Thursday the 25th, which is when we had the best catches of the week. It just goes to show that there are no set rules when it comes to fishing.
